Water restrictions should be eased

Posted on August 24, 2010

The South Australian Liberal Opposition has called for an immediate easing of household water restrictions in South Australia.

At present SA householders are restricted to using dripper systems and hand-held hoses with a trigger nozzle for a maximum of seven hours a week between the hours of 7 am to 10 am or 4 pm to 7 pm any day.

Yesterday, the Victorian Government announced that Melbourne residents could hand-water gardens at any time and wash cars at home from 1 September 2010.

Mitch Williams, Shadow Water Security Minister said that Premier Rann must explain why he doesn’t trust South Australians to be responsible with the use of house hold water.

“South Australians are the most responsible users of water in the nation and understand how precious a resource it is, yet the Rann Government continues to treat the community with disdain,” Mr Williams said.

“Premier Mike Rann, known for his “spin” is obviously delaying the easing of water restrictions so he can have a photo opportunity turning the tap on at the $2.2 billion desalination plant later this year - South Australians have every right to be offended.”
