SA waits longer for elective surgery

Posted on June 30, 2010

South Australians are waiting longer today for elective surgery than they were 10 years ago as revealed in the State of Our Public Hospitals June 2010.

The State of Our Public Hospitals June 2010 report by the Federal Department of Health and Ageing provides a detailed report card on public hospital performance in the 2008-09 financial year.

Duncan McFetridge, Shadow Health Minister said that the latest report reveals that SA public hospitals continue to fall below national average standards across many areas of health service delivery.

“On average South Australians waited 34 days in 2008-2009 for elective surgery, a week longer than the 27 days they waited 10 years ago,” Dr McFetridge said.

“The number of SA patients seen within the clinically acceptable times in Emergency departments is below the national average – in SA only 64 percent of people were seen in a clinically acceptable time while the national average was 70 per cent.

“The SA 2009-10 Budget supports the findings of this Federal report outlining that public hospital’s in the Central Northern Adelaide Health Service fall well below the National Health Care Agreement target for treatment of category three status patients in emergency departments.

“Almost nine years of the Rann Labor Government has seen the SA public health system crumble and fall into critical state.

“South Australian health professionals are forced to work in an under resourced health system burdened by a ballooning bureaucracy while SA patients wait longer and endure more pain and discomfort”.
