Car owners ripped off and deceived

Posted on June 27, 2010

South Australian motorists are being ripped off and left vulnerable to prosecution because of an unscrupulous decision by the Minister for Transport to withhold car registration renewal notices from the post until July 1 2010.

Car registration fees rise by three per cent and Compulsory Third Party Insurance rises by an average of 7.2 per cent on July 1 2010.

Steven Griffiths, Shadow Transport Minster said that he had been contacted by a number of people whose car registration expires on June 30 2010, yet they had still not received a renewal notice leaving them worried about driving an unregistered car.

“The Department of Transport informed them that no renewal notices will be posted until July 1 2010 so that the new increases in registration charges can be incorporated,” Mr Griffiths said.

“Transport Minister Pat Conlon has been caught red handed trying to grab extra cash from unsuspecting car owners who may not be aware that their car registration is due.

“Most people rely on the receipt of the car registration renewal notice to alert them that they need to re-register their car.

“If the renewal notices aren’t being posted there may be many thousands of motorists unaware that their car is unregistered as of June 30 2010.

“This is scandalous and a shameful attempt by an untrustworthy government to trick car owners into paying the July 1 increases instead of the fees as at June 30 2010.

“In a bid to grab more cash for the state coffers Pat Conlon is prepared to leave SA car owners vulnerable to prosecution for driving an unregistered vehicle with no Compulsory Third Party Insurance”.

Motor registration fee increases – July 1 2010

Four cylinder $99 $102 3%
Five or six cylinder $201 $208 3%
Seven or more cylinders $292 $302 3%
