South Australia deserves better

Rann has many questions to answer

Posted on April 21, 2010

The sham National Health and Hospitals Network Agreement announced yesterday by Prime Minister Rudd raises many serious questions about the future delivery of health services to South Australians.

Leader of the Opposition, Isobel Redmond said that the compromise deal reached between the Labor State Governments is certain to create yet another layer of highly paid bureaucrats to oversee South Australia’s already inefficiently managed health system.

“The growth in bureaucracy is about the only issue to be made clear from this agreement,” Ms Redmond said.

“Premier Rann must explain to South Australians why he was prepared agree to handover SA Health based on one phone call from the Prime Minister Kevin Rudd during the SA election campaign, when other Premiers’ negotiations have earned SA another $1.4 billion?

“Mike Rann must also answer the following questions:

  1. Why has SA given $1.3 billion per year, and rising, of GST revenue in exchange for more bureaucracy?
  2. What health responsibilities that SA currently has, will we lose under the agreement?
  3. If Western Australia doesn’t sign up, is the deal off?
  4. Will SA be worse off because of health payments being based on a national price of health services?
  5. Will the proposed railyards RAH hospital be 60% funded under the agreement?
  6. How many Local Hospital Networks will be in SA?
“South Australians deserve to be confident that any Commonwealth take over of the health system will deliver a better health out come.

“The Rudd Government’s track record on delivery of services is appalling – combined with the mis-management of the Rann Government could be a disaster for SA health”.
