Taxi service to be lifted

The standard of taxi service in South Australia and the safety of customers and drivers will be significantly improved under a Redmond Liberal Government.

Launching the SA Liberal Taxi Industry Policy today, Isobel Redmond Opposition Leader said that for the past eight years the Rann Government has allowed the taxi industry to languish.
 
“Safe, clean, reliable taxis are a vital part of a cost-effective public transport system,” Ms Redmond said.
 
“Rather than being pro-active the Rann Government has been re-active in its handling of issues around passenger and driver safety in taxis.
 
“In 2002 the Premier announced the establishment of the Premier’s Taxi Council to deal with the many issues facing the industry but the Council has only met sporadically and the Premier does not attend – it’s just ’ window dressing’.
 
“On forming government in March 2010 a Redmond Liberal Government in partnership with the taxi industry will:
 
  • Introduce a Responsible Service Certificate for all drivers which will include mandatory components e.g. English language ability and navigational expertise, passenger comfort and security.
  • Require drivers to have held an unqualified South Australian driver’s licence for 12 months as a prerequisite to obtaining a licence to drive a taxi.
  • Investigate the provision of camera installations that retain CCTV footage for an extended period.
  • Introduce measures to grant licences to taxi services in regional SA.
  • Maintain an equitable number of taxi plates per capita.
David Ridgway, Shadow Transport Minister said that the SA Liberal’s are committed to assisting the SA Taxi industry to move from the uncertainty of the past eight years to a certain and confident future.
 
“SA taxi users and the SA Taxi industry deserve a better deal, under a Redmond Liberal Government that’s what they will get”.
