Residents protest over intersection

Posted on November 27, 2009

Over 700 north eastern residents have signed a petition calling for the upgrade of the Research Road/Main North Road junction.

Signed by 767 local residents, the petition calls for the Rann Government to undertake an urgent traffic audit and transport investigation to improve the junction’s safety.

The petition was presented by Liberal MLC John Dawkins to the Legislative Council on Thursday 19 November 2009.

“We need to make this dangerous intersection safer.  I’m not a traffic expert but I would reject the Minister’s suggestion of blocking right hand turns,” Mr Dawkins said.

“I’m extremely pleased to support Kerry and congratulate her for her efforts in circulating this petition.”

Liberal Candidate for Playford, Kerry Faggotter circulated the petition at 60 businesses on Research Road after receiving a response from Road Safety Minister, Michael O’Brien proposing to ban all right turns from Research Road onto Main North Road.

“I have been overwhelmed by the local community’s support in rejecting the State Government’s proposal,” Mrs Faggotter said.

“I am determined to work hard for my community, to support them in every way.  767 signatures would indicate there is a real safety issue at Research Road and Main North Road and I urge the Government to investigate.”

Mr Dawkins said he was baffled to hear of the State Governments so-called ‘most effective treatment’, as the ban on right hand turns would impact on motorists, residents and local businesses in the area.

“I look forward to the Rann Government reinvestigating how to improve the intersection for the benefit of all users rather than taking the cheap and easy option.”
