Playing with water restrictions insulting

Posted on October 29, 2009

Labor Water Security Minister Karlene Maywald’s cynical attempt to toy with water restrictions by not committing to whether she will or will not ease restrictions is insulting.

Earlier today Minister Maywald touted that once she knows how much water “we have in the bucket” she will make a decision.

Mitch Williams, Shadow Water Security Minister said that if Karlene does not know today if she will or will not ease water restrictions she is not across her portfolio or playing pure politics with the single most important issue in SA, water.

“With the abundant resources and staff the Minister has at her fingertips she would already know if she was going to ease water restrictions - instead she has treated the community like fools,” Mr Williams said.

“Three weeks ago I called for a temporary easing of water restrictions allowing councils to give parks and gardens a substantial soaking rather than allowing the full dams around Adelaide to overflow and precious water wash out to sea.

“This is a chance for the Rann Government to put water captured to good use instead of letting it flow out to sea.

“South Australians are water wise and water conscious and have demonstrated time and time again their responsible use of water, Karlene should not toy with peoples livelihoods and lifestyles”.
