Rann Government attempts to gag Opposition

Posted on October 29, 2009

Under pressure in Parliament today, the Rann Government sought to stifle debate about issues important to South Australians by reducing the number of questions asked by the Opposition.

The accepted convention is that the Opposition is given the opportunity to ask at least 10 questions each question time.

Today only seven questions instead of the standard ten were allowed to be put to the Rann Government.

Opposition Leader Isobel Redmond said the Rann Government was showing it was becoming increasingly sensitive about certain issues by not allowing the Opposition to ask questions of its Ministers.

“The Rann Government is treating question time with contempt,” Ms Redmond said.

“While we are restricted from asking questions the Rann Government is given free reign to ask questions of itself which are met with long winded prepared answers.

“South Australians deserve better.”
