Where are the police?

Posted on September 30, 2009

Violent crime is terrorising people at their workplaces, in their homes and on the street, yet the Rann Government has provided no effective strategy to curb the rising violence.

Welcoming the graduation today of 15 new South Australia Police Officers from the Fort Largs Bay Police Academy Acting Shadow Police Minister Michael Pengilly said that the Rann Government must inform the community where South Australia’s police officers are working because they are not visibly in the community acting as a deterrent to crime.

“They are not visible ‘on the beat’ in adequate numbers to either halt violence or deter violent gangs from attacking innocent people,” Mr. Pengilly said.

“Just this month there has been more than 60 violent robberies and attacks using knives, guns, iron bars or machetes on innocent people as they either work, sleep or shopped in and around Adelaide.

“ABS figures show that roughly 50 people per day in SA are assaulted; violent assault in SA has increased steadily since 2002 with 17,178 people becoming victims of assault in 2008.

ABS figures highlight that between 2002 and 2008:
·        Homicide and related offences increased by 22.6%
·        Armed Robbery has increased by 10.4 %
·        Assault has increased by 3.9 %

“Unprovoked attacks on defenceless people, shootings and violent robberies have become an almost daily occurrence.

“A major deterrent to spiralling crime is to have more well resourced police officers patrolling the streets 24 hours a day.

“Mike Rann’s chest beating about being ‘tough on crime’ is all talk with no results”.
