A Redmond Liberal Government will establish a dedicated Defence Ministry – something the Rann Government has failed to do for the last eight years despite claiming credit for the state’s defence industry.
Liberal Spokesman for Defence Industry Development Martin Hamilton-Smith said establishing a Defence Ministry would enable South Australia to capitalise on the defence projects currently underway.
“Our focus will also be on the economic spin-offs from Australian Defence Force bases within the state, and the families, investment and business which comes with these bases,” Mr Hamilton-Smith said.
The Liberals will also support the defence industry in South Australia by;
• Focusing on export development while growing our slice of the local market;
• Working with the Commonwealth and private sector to capitalise on defence opportunities;
• Encouraging defence training in SA; and,
• Building skills and training capabilities across the sector.
“Our focus will also be on defence science, innovation & entrepreneurship and ensuring the industry is well supported by all levels of government,” Mr Hamilton-Smith said.
“Supported by Defence SA and the Department of Trade and Economic Development, the portfolio will be focused on ensuring defence remains a viable industry for many years ahead.”
