The State Budget

Posted on June 25, 2011

On June 9th Labor delivered its tenth budget to South Australia. The legacy of this budget is more debt, more deficit and generations of budget pain for South Australians.

South Australia’s new Treasurer, Jack Snelling, delivered his first budget pitching himself as a family man and likening Labor’s budget to a household budget, only on a bigger scale.

This is far from the case. Households and small businesses are struggling paying their bills and make ends meet. Labor is increasing everything from water bills, motor registration, driver's licences, bus tickets, CTP premiums and levies. Labor promised the world for families and businesses, but failed to deliver it.

The reality is that if a family consistently spends more than it earns it will end up in financial strife – and that is exactly where Labor has led South Australia.

Now this Government must explain to South Australians how it will address escalating cost of living pressures.

Labor’s Budget provides no incentives for South Australia’s business community and no relief for families from spiralling water, electricity and other utility charges.

Labor is building a new hospital instead on upgrading the one we already have. When the new hospital is constructed, without including paying for any doctors and nurses, the ongoing running and maintenance payments will cost more than $1.1 million per day in taxpayer repayments for 30 years.

This means a 15-year-old today will still be paying off Labor’s $1.1 million per day taxpayer repayments when they mark their 50th birthday. Not much of a celebration!

The Government has sold SA’s forestry assets, SA Lotteries Commission and the SA Visitor and Travel Centre and delayed hospital upgrades and other infrastructure projects and increased utilities like water by more than 400 per cent.

The bottom line for South Australians is Labor financial mismanagement has delivered more debt, a bigger deficit and generations of Budget pain for South Australians.

Ms Redmond has hit the nail on the head. Families are struggling. Older pensioners are leaving heaters off because they cannot afford electricity bill. They go cold instead.Shame on you Labour.
